Under The Sea, Senior Thesis
Under the Sea

Under the Sea is an exhibition incorporating both ceramics and metal sculptures. Under the Sea was inspired by my love and passion for the ocean, the Art Nouveau movement, and various ceramic artists. From the waves to the seashells beneath them, the ocean has inspired the textures, colors, and forms of each functional ceramic bowl and welded stands that support them. This collection of ceramic bowls with welded stands allows people to bring a small piece of the ocean into their homes. My bowls are textured coral designs and consistency, many different types of shell’s textures, and all glazed with a theme of ocean colors.
Being an Art Major and a Business Major, I have learned the importance of purpose and functionality. I chose the bowls to be the focus of my thesis because of a bowl’s functionality and practicality. Bowls can be used for many different purposes; they contain the basic necessities of life. Bowls bring people together, as in family time at the dinner table. A bowl is a communal item, shared by many. My bowls in particular are each made to not only look beautiful, but to also be functional, as well as inspirational.
This body of work of clay and metal is inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, which is a combination of integrated and decorative forms of organic lines and shapes, aimed to elevate “the decorative arts to the level of fine art by applying the highest standards of craftsmanship and design to everyday objects”. This movement took inspiration from the wild aspects of the natural world. Art Nouveau emphasized handcrafting as opposed to machine manufacturing, the use of new materials. It has inspired me to improve my craftsmanship and design while working with both clay and metal.
